usage
terms of use
The basis for use is the General Regulations for Use of the Bavarian State Libraries (ABOB in German). Notwithstanding Section 5 (1) ABOB, the application for a library user account, see the following section "Opening a library account", can also be submitted by e-mail with a scanned or digitally inserted signature. Borrowing is only possible with a library user account and library card.
In addition, the following guidelines apply:
- DIT house rules
- Privacy Policy of the library
terms of use for electronic offers (databases, e-books, e-journals)
- Terms and conditions of those providers, which can be found on their websites, apply
Generally speaking:
- Conditions regarding downloads and printing are determined by the provider
- Transfer of content to third parties is not allowed
- The use is only permitted for own, scientific purposes
- Systematic download is prohibited
copyright / data protection in electronic offers (databases, e-books, journals)
The use of our electronic offers (e-books, e-journals, databases) is possible within the framework of copyright law.
In addition, the licence agreements of the respective provider apply. The applicable licence conditions can be viewed on our homepage (E-books/Research & Databases) and on the providers' pages.
The electronic offers can be accessed via the library homepage, the OPAC or externally (Google or similar). Access is automatically established via IP check (with VPN connection outside the campus). With most providers, you can recognise by our logo/name that it is a product licensed by us.
You do not have to provide any personal data to access our licensed offers.
However, many providers allow personal registration for further functions (watch lists, bookmarks, saving search queries...). The use of such offers is voluntary. If a person decides to use them, the provider is the person responsible for processing personal data. The providers' data protection information can be viewed on their website. If corresponding offers are not used, this will not result in any disadvantages or restrictions for you in terms of pure access to the electronic offers.
In particular, we would like to point out that when using corresponding additional offers, data may be transferred to a third country whose level of data protection does not correspond to that of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and you may not have all rights and freedoms for the protection of personal data available to you to the same extent.
for students:
Please follow steps 1-3!
1) Fill out the user application and:
scan the page (as a PDF file), plus a photo of your validated student ID.
The application with the subject "User account" has to be sent to bib-service@th-deg.de at the Deggendorf location, to monika.stoeckl@th-deg.de at the Pfarrkirchen location.
2) Carry out a self-registration via the OPAC (Login → Self-Registration).
Only a carefully completed form can be activated. Incorrect self-registrations will be deleted after approx. 2 days. Only then can the form be filled out again.
- For your library account, use your university mail address
- if necessary also your private mail address in second place.
3) Choose an introductory course for the library
or
inform yourself on the library's website about the regulations and procedures regarding the use of the library.
The account is usually activated within 3 days after all documents have been submitted. There is no confirmation. Test the registration yourself via the OPAC after this period (usernumber: 0230 and 7-digit number on the student ID/chip(card) (without letter and zero)).
Watch the video guide on opening an account
for staff:
In deviation from the above procedure, the blue chip is required for the registration.

book loan
Books are borrowed by self-service using your student ID and password.
Make sure there is sufficient clearance at the self-checker. Otherwise, incorrect bookings can occur.
Put max. 5 books at the same time on the marked area and close your account - ideally with the button "finished"! Check your receipt carefully.
Check the condition of the books and show damaged or soiled books and media to the librarian.
Please note the following (ABOB § 8 duty of care and compensation):
(1) The users have to treat the works carefully and protect them from damage. Entries of any kind, such as painting and reporting of errors, as well as the turning over of page corners, are considered to be damage.
(2) The user must check the condition of each item upon receipt and report any damage immediately. If they choose not to do this, it is assumed that the work has been borrowed in an undamaged condition.
A maximum of 32 books can be borrowed.
returns
You can return your books at the counter during opening hours.
Outside opening hours, returns can be put in the returns box (DEG: entrance area of the library / ECRI: main entrance main building on the left; always open). It closes automatically as soon as it is full. The books will be returned on the next opening day.
The books must be returned on the deadline day at the latest.
orders from the stockroom
You can order books and journals from ITC2 stockroom via the OPAC. Books will be available for collection from the main library on the next opening day from 1pm. Journal volumes are available in main library and can be copied or read on site.
The orders are ready within 5 working days.
loan extension or renewal
Any book from the DIT library that is not pre-ordered or on special loan can be extended up to two times for the same period. The extension can be carried out via your OPAC user account or on the self-checkout. An extension application by email is not possible.
Special regulations apply to the extension of interlibrary loan books.
reservations
A reservation can be made via the OPAC for books currently on loan.
These books will be kept at the counter for a week after they have been returned. If the new user has saved an email address in their user account, they will receive a notification about the availability of the desired title.

overnight and weekend loan
Books with the lending classification 20/32/42 can be borrowed over night or over one weekend: Collection/loan 1 hour before closing, return by 12 noon the next day.
We want DIT’s libraries to be accessible to everyone. If you encounter any barriers during your visit, please do not hesitate to contact us. Together, we are sure to find an individual solution for your needs.
Guide or assistance dogs that have undergone the appropriate training and are duly recognised as assistance dogs are allowed to enter the library without question.
In Deggendorf, the nearest disabled parking spaces for the library are located south-east of Building E. The marked access route is shown in the building plan.
There are two designated disabled parking spaces situated near the ECRI Library in front of the main entrance to Building A (building plan).
ASSISTANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS
Unfortunately, the door to the main library in Deggendorf is not yet motorised and is quite difficult to open. Plans to install an automatic door opener have already been submitted to the Passau building authority. If you need help entering, please knock to let us know – we will be happy to assist you. When leaving, please also contact the library information desk staff.
To the left of the information desk is a lift that takes you to all floors. Should you need assistance finding or removing media from the shelves, please ask at the desk in advance. Needless to say, this service is also available for the ECRI library.
For people with full-body disabilities, we can activate the integrated eye control feature in Windows on our PCs and connect your eye-tracking devices. Please feel free to ask us about this as well.
The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilet in Deggendorf is located directly in the corridor in front of the main library, Room G002.
In Pfarrkirchen, an additional ladies’ toilet, designated as a disabled toilet, is located near the ECRI library, on the ground floor of Building A. Another can be found in Building B (SILC), Ground Floor, Room 0.03.
ASSISTANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS
We are happy to assist you in navigating the library and using the PCs. To do so, turn right after entering the library and go to the information desk. There, we will help you get your bearings and, if you wish, accompany you through the library.
Our lift to the left of the desk does not currently have voice output or tactile labelling. If you do not wish to be accompanied, you will find a description of the buttons here: on the right-hand side of the lift, there are six buttons measuring approximately three by three centimetres, arranged one above the other. At the bottom is the emergency button, which you should press and hold for five seconds if the lift gets stuck and you need assistance. Above this is the button for opening the door if it closes too quickly. This is followed by the buttons for the floors in ascending order: at the very bottom is the basement, then the ground floor, first floor and second floor.
All our PCs are equipped with screen magnifiers and the integrated Windows speech output function. This supports both navigation and text reading. If possible, please bring your own headphones.
Many of our licensed e-books can be converted from PDF to Word format and can therefore be processed reasonably well using screen readers. A handful of publishers also offer EPUB formats. Alternatively, PDF formats can be converted to EPUB using Calibre or OS-APS.
Should you encounter any barriers with PDFs, please let us know. We will be happy to contact the publishers or database providers, but cannot guarantee any improvements unfortunately.
The DIT’s declaration on digital accessibility for the visually impaired can be found at Accessibility.
ASSISTANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
Our library staff have headsets available. If your cochlear implant or hearing aid can be connected to our PCs via Bluetooth or USB, we will be happy to advise you on how to use them. Alternatively, we also offer written communication via notepads or our screens.
Where requested, DIT’s disability officers can also help you apply for sign language interpreters or other technical aids. In this context, please read Study with disability Auxiliaries/Assistance/Quiet room.
1. diploma, bachelor and master theses
Only theses that have been evaluated particularly well and for which the company involved has also given its consent for inclusion in the library can be viewed.
To have your thesis included in the library, please contact your supervisor.

- Costs for the 2nd reminder: additional € 10
- Costs for the 3rd reminder: additional € 20 + € 3.45 shipping fee
- Costs for the value replacement (notification): additional € 30 + € 3.45 shipping fee
Of main importance is the return of the media. Currently, you will receive an invoice automatically, in case of a reminder only after the return of the media. Invoice number and booking reference must be stated when transferring the invoice amount! The account is automatically unlocked as soon as the media is returned and payment is made. Unless there is another reason for blocking the account.
replacements
Lost or damaged library items will be invoiced.
To ensure a pleasant atmosphere for everyone to study and work, we kindly ask you to observe the following:
food and drinks
Eating in the library is not permitted. Beverages may be brought in securely sealed containers.
noise level
Please be mindful of the noise level in the library. For group work, workrooms are available in the main library and in the ITC2 library.
Remember to switch your phones to silent mode!
main library extended opening hours
The exact time period will be announced in time under news before the exam preparation.
itc2 library
Various individual and group study rooms are available in ITC2. Rooms can be booked using the Seatsurfing room booking program (only on the university network via Eduroam/eduVPN).
Further details on booking can be found here: Brief overview of booking | ITC2 usage information.
Lockers
The keys are available at the counter as long as you have an activated library account.
Borrowing is possible until the next opening day.
Baskets
The baskets are located in the entrance area of the library and they are available only while you are in the library.
Self-checkout is possible. Please ignore the deadline set by the loan program. The rule is: Return the basket before the library closes.
Carrels are individual or group study rooms. They are all open and can be used like the reading room spaces. They can be found on the upper and lower floors.
For more information on the carrels in ITC2, see Extended opening hours, ITC2 library.
In the basement you can find a Follow-Me printer which can be used with your student card.
A ScanTent is also available in the copy room. It allows you to scan documents using your smartphone.
The library offers two exhibition areas on the mezzanine floor of the main library on the Deggendorf campus. These are located on the side walls of the mezzanine and equipped with gallery rails and hanging cords (each approx. 6 metres long, currently equipped with 10 cords each).
In total, up to 20 smaller works or – if two hanging cords are used – up to 10 large-format pictures can be presented. Usually, title cards and information concerning ordering options and prices can also be provided. The narrow spacing to the facing shelves (approx. 1.20 m) makes this area particular suitable for smaller paintings, prints, engravings or paper cuttings. Very large formats are difficult to view properly due to the lack of spacing available.
Artists interested in exhibiting their work can contact us by email at bib-service@th-deg.de. An exhibition agreement (Word, PDF ) will need to be concluded before any form of exhibition may occur. The timing of an exhibition is coordinated in consultation with the library as part of its existing annual schedule – exhibitions typically change every one to two months.
Applications are open to members of Deggendorf Institute of Technology who are practising arts, and also non-DIT members from the city and district of Deggendorf, such as members of the Deggendorf Arts Association.
Please note that the library does not insure the artworks and cannot guarantee that exhibition will be supervised. Where expensive or unique artworks are concerned, we recommend taking out your own insurance (exhibition insurance or general art insurance, including exhibition and transport cover) or using prints or posters instead of originals.

research & databases
All of our databases are now stored in the DBIS database information system.
In addition to the databases we have licensed, freely available databases are now also included. The respective access types are also noted for each database.
Access to most databases is still via IP check.
This means that with Eduroam or on permanently installed PCs on campus, access is automatic without further authentication. Outside the campus, eduVPN is required for access.
For the following databases, authentication differs from the above procedure:
Beck online, Juris, Statista, ResearchConnect
In addition, most databases allow users to register personally. This is voluntary and is done without any responsibility on the part of THD. Information on the data collected there and how it is processed can be found in the respective privacy policies of the provider.
We generally recommend starting your search via the links in DBIS. This is the only way we can guarantee that all our licensed content can be accessed.
As before, the databases are stored thematically under Collections.
Selected, freely available databases (green traffic light) are listed under Subjects – the TOP databases of the THD are at the top.
You can search for database titles/descriptions using the Search function. There are also extensive filter options, e.g. by subject area, keywords, etc.
The most important information about DBIS is summarised in this instruction.
general information
- The research in databases is free for members of the university. Access can be granted for external users as far as licence agreements allow it.
- Access is via IP check. A library account is not necessary for university members.

copyright / data protection in electronic offers (databases, e-books, journals)
In particular, we would like to point out that when using corresponding additional offers, data may be transferred to a third country whose level of data protection does not correspond to that of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and you may not have all rights and freedoms for the protection of personal data available to you to the same extent.

interlibrary loan
Literature that isn't available from the DIT library can be borrowed from another library.
The DIT library is networked with other German libraries, regulations can be read here: Leihverkehrsordnung (LVO) vom 19.09.2003 (Fassung vom 10.10.2008).
How interlibrary loan works
You can order books as well as book chapters or articles from journals.
Your online account will allow you to borrow 7 items simultaneously, although the maximum number of interlibrary books is capped at 12.
Further orders are possible as soon as orders have arrived.
The follwing items not available for interlibrary lending are::
- Items available at in the DIT library
- Items that can bought for a low price, less than 15 Euros
- Papers and magazines
- Bachelor dissertations from other universities
- Books and media for hobbies and pastimes, which can be found in Deggendorf public library
Fees
As a trial, we are waiving interlibrary loan fees. However, please place orders judiciously, as each order incurs costs for the DIT.
How to borrow a book from the interlibrary service
Please check each title before ordering at the OPAC. Only literature that is not available in the DIT library can be lent.
The order is placed through the OPAC: Interlibrary loan - how to order
Delivery and delivery times
Books:
If you have saved your email address in the library account, you will receive a notification when an interlibrary loan arrives. The items are ready for collection at the counter by the loan period. All conditions of use are determined by the owning library and can be very different. They can be found in the data medium inside the book.
Delivery usually takes 4-5 working days.
Papers:
Customers will receive a download link via email that is valid for 40 days. The library account user number and password are required to access the document.
In a few exceptional cases, delivery may be made as a paper copy for licensing reasons. They are ready for collection at the counter.
Delivery usually takes 1-3 working days.
Loan extension
- Via the DIT librarian
- Please send a mail to bib-service@th-deg.de, at least 3 days before the end of the loan period
- You will only receive mail feedback if your request is turned down
- You can find a new loan period in your user account (via OPAC or self-booking)
- Please note that interlibrary loan services are subject to reservation, i.e. users are required to return them as soon as a book is reclaimed from the owning library
Returns
- The end of the loan period is on the data carrier and can be viewed in the user account (via OPAC or self-booking)
- If your email address is stored in the account, you will be reminded of the return date about 3 days prior to the deadline
- Please keep in mind that the loan period must also be observed if an application for extension is rejected
- The interlibrary loan books come with a data carrier with all the important information that should be returned with it. Otherwise a fee of € 5 is charged
literature management Programme
Literature management programmes help to collect and manage literature and information. Citations and bibliographies can be created without much effort.
It makes sense to start using them at the beginning of your studies, as the programmes can also be helpful when writing term papers. For the Bachelor's thesis at the latest, you should no longer do without them.
The DIT works with the open source programme Zotero. We also offer trainings for it.
The University Library of the Technical University of Munich offers a detailed comparison (ger) of current literature management programmes.
Zotero
Zotero is a free (up to 300 MB disk space) open source programme that can be used with Windows, MacOS and Linux operating systems.
Instructions for synchronizing Zotero and Nextcloud can be found in the “IT Services” section of myTHD.
For students, these instructions will soon be available in the mythdeg section.
We can recommend the following materials for familiarisation:

open science
GENERAL INFORMATION
Open science is about opening up scientific research, communication, teaching and learning processes to greater exchange, transparency, legal security, reusability and reproducibility. It thus enables reliable and good scientific practice and faster and globally accessible dissemination of research results. Open science includes open access, open education, open data, open source software, open hardware and open methodology.
The university and university library are involved in many of these areas. The Statutes for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice and Dealing with Scientific Misconduct at Deggendorf Institute of Technology regulate aspects such as open source software and open data. Similarly, in the context of research projects, regulations as to whether and how third parties are granted access to research data should be laid down and, if possible and reasonable, self-programmed software should be made accessible along with the source code (Section 14). The Open Access Policy of Deggendorf Institute of Technology provides recommendations for the secondary publication and archiving of publications and for applying for funding to reimburse the costs for publication in open access journals.
COUNSELLING
Do you have any questions about open science? The library management (bib-leitung@th-deg.de) and the university's Open Access Officer can help you if you have any questions about open access. Dr. Seffer (kristin.seffer@th-deg.de) and Ms. Kling (karin.kling@th-deg.de) can help you with open data and research data management. The other aspects of open science are also gradually being expanded, so the Digital Teaching team can be contacted about open educational resources.

Also see https://forschungsdaten.info/fr/themen/finden-und-nachnutzen/forschungsdaten-finden/ for further search options.
By open educational resources
Open Educational Resources (OER) can include a wide variety of resources, from images, PowerPoint presentations, videos, textbooks and assignment books to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). One of the most important search engines for universities is the Open Educational Resources Search Index (OERSI).
Image sources for lectures or courses are often found via Wikimedia Commons or Google Image Search (search filter usage rights: "Creative Commons licences"). Also see https://open-educational-resources.de/materialien/oer-verzeichnisse-und-services/ for further search options.
By open source software
The website https://osssoftware.org/ lists open source alternatives to popular programmes and usage scenarios. The Open Source Observatory (OSOR) is also an information source for researchers and university administrative organisations who want to use open source solutions. Open source code can also be found on platforms such as GitHub or SourceForge.
By open hardware
With the OHO Search Engine, the Open Hardware Observatory offers a search engine that specialises in Open Hardware and Do it Yourself projects. You can also explore many projects in the Open Hardware Repository.
With the Open Lab Starter Kit, you can create open source hardware and machines at low cost.
ABOUT OPUS THD
OPUS THD the central repository and online publication system of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology. OPUS THD enables all members of the university to publish electronic full texts free of charge: https://opus4.kobv.de/opus4-thd/publish. For this, authors grant the library only simple (i.e. non-exclusive) rights that are required for the provision of the service. The exclusive rights of use remain entirely with the authors.
Accordingly, all DIT members have the opportunity to publish their academic work from research and teaching as Open Access via OPUS THD – either as first or as second publications. The publications will be archived on a long-term basis and made permanently accessible worldwide free of charge. They are available under open licences, easily discoverable through library catalogues and search engines, and reliably citable. For online help and guidelines please visit https://opus4.kobv.de/opus4-thd/home/index/help .
LEGAL ASPECTS
Before any future publication, please ensure that copyright and licensing requirements are met and that no third-party rights – such as those of publishers – are infringed. If the work in question has already been published, please check the self-archiving policy of the respective publisher (see the homepage of the publisher or the Open Policy Finder) or refer to your individual publishing agreement. Please also pay particular attention to any potential blocking periods and the versions permitted (e.g. preprint, post print) in order to correctly take these requirements into account during the future publication process via OPUS THD.
SECONDARY PUBLICATION SERVICE
Upon request, Ana Munandar will be happy to support you in reviewing your personal publication list or that of your team. Where possible, she determines which of your publications may be republished under open access, under what conditions and after what embargo periods – and, in consultation with you and your team, she will also take on the secondary publication process on your behalf in the future.
To make use of the secondary publication service, please complete the form “Abgabe elektronischer Publikationen innerhalb des Zweitveröffentlichungsservices der Bibliothek der Technischen Hochschule Deggendorf (THD)” (PDF, Word) and get in touch with us.
DEEPGREEN
DeepGreen enables the automated transfer of publisher publications to our institutional repository OPUS THD. Eligible articles – for example those covered by Creative Commons licences, alliance licences, national licences or FID licences – are published as secondary publications via OPUS THD, in line with the ”Green way of Open Access”, with the publisher’s permission, and are archived for the long term. This long-term archiving closes a gap that many publishers themselves are unable or unwilling to address. For DIT authors, this process involves no additional effort.
COSTS
**PAY ATTENTION** Due to funding cuts, contrary to the information below, no more open access publications can be financed from central DIT funds this year by Dr. Seffer!
The financing responsibility shifts in the case of open access: while in the case of closed access, readers or the library purchase the journal, issue or book, with open access, access to the publication is unrestricted and free of charge. Many publishers are therefore shifting their revenue side towards publication charges and related Open Access Article Processing Charges (APC) or Book Processing Charges (BPC). Therefore, please make sure before publishing that you can finance this cost or that this cost can be absorbed (see Form: Application for the assumption of charges for open access publications. Contact person is Dr. Seffer (kristin.seffer@th-deg.de); please note that cost absorption does not take place automatically and every time an application is submitted).
Exceptions to this are so-called Diamond Open Access publishers and journals without BPC or APC. As a rule, these are run or financed non-commercially by professional societies, universities or libraries, which is why they are not dependent on large monetary incomes. These journals are characterised by standard quality criteria such as ISSN and the assignment of persistent identifiers, a scientific-qualitative orientation with peer review, 100% open access through the granting of open licences, no publication fees, non-discrimination (no exclusion of certain affiliations or countries) and the fact that they are owned or administered by the scientific community (‘scholarly led’ ). The THD supports such models, on the one hand through its own journals Bavarian Journal of Applied Sciences and Journal of Applied Interdisciplinary Research, and on the other hand by supporting the transformation of wt Werkstattstechnik online, Bewegtbilder, and Yearbook of Moving Image Studies to Diamond Open Access.
Diamond Open Access journals without publication charges can be searched via the following sources:
- In the Directory of Open Access Journals, via the filter “Without Fees”
- In the Free Journal Network
- In the Diamond Discovery Hub (Beta-Version)
- In the list of Diamond Open Access journals hosted in Germany
- In the Electronic Journals Library (EZB) using filters for the category ‘Diamond Open Access Journal’ or ‘Journal without APC’
- Unfortunately, extensive search options for BPC-free open access books are not available yet. However, Open Book Publishers is a well-known publisher without BPCs. More and more publishers also take part in BPC-free crowdfunding models, for example Knowledge Unlatched or Purchase to Open. Here you can find information about (partial) funding opportunities or the participation of a publisher.
Any research funded by the European Commission can also be published without APC in Open Research Europe.
When you publish in closed access, you sometimes have the option of free open access Secondary publication.
Finding suitable open access journals
There are various support platforms and journal recommenders to facilitate the search for suitable journals. Please note that all open access business forms, and not just Diamond Open Access, have been listed here. Check the cost situation accordingly:
- oa.finder: this platform takes into account existing open access contracts of the respective institution, lists the relevant journals to which the contract applies and makes them searchable via keyword or title searches.
- B!SON: here, you can enter the conceived title, abstract and, if available, the sources already cited; a list of suitable open access journals with a corresponding relevance score is then displayed.
- Jane – Journal/Author Name Estimator (Show extra options – Choose your open access options: “Search only open access journals”): here, too, you can enter the title and/or abstract and get a list of suggestions.
- Recommendations from open-access.network depending on the discipline: experts from the respective subject areas have compiled information on relevant open access journals here.
- Publisher-specific journal recommenders, e.g., SpringerNature Journal suggester, Elsevier JournalFinder, Wiley Journal Finder, Taylor & Francis Journal Suggester, etc. with partial filter and selection options by open access
Two APC-free (see Costs) Diamond Open Access journals hosted at the university are the Bavarian Journal of Applied Sciences and the Journal of Applied Interdisciplinary Research.
Identifying predatory publishers
In order to find the right journal for an open access publication, you should check the journal in advance for reliability (also see Think. Check. Submit) or use white lists such as the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). There are so-called pseudo-publishers/predatory publishers (Predatory publishers) who promise rapid publication but offer no or inadequate quality assurance (peer review).
The following points should be considered positive for a newly published scientific journal: an established publisher, an affiliation with a professional society, verifiable evidence in relevant databases, an official journal impact factor, the use of persistent identifiers (ISSN, DOI), transparent policies for the long-term archiving of publications and research data, renowned editors and editorial team, and established and serious peer review procedures with expert reviewers.
In addition to the lack of the above, the following points are also considered negative: self-calculated or imaginary impact factors, the false indication of indexing in subject-specific databases under Abstracting and Indexing Services, the publisher's registered office at accommodation addresses or addresses in Asia that cannot be verified via Google Maps, and the use of spam e-mails and mass invitations to publish.
See also the checklist of characteristics of dubious journals on this topic.
Deal and other open access conctracts on DIT
SpringerNature
The DIT participates in the SpringerNature contract of the DEAL project.
There is a discount on the publication charges (APCs) for publications in open access journals of the SpringerOpen and BioMed Central brands. For the journal list and discounted APCs, see https://keeper.mpdl.mpg.de/f/a6dc1e1ed4fc4becb194/?dl=1, column “Current DEAL Cost Contribution” under publishing model “Fully Open Access”. Please note that the APC is subject to an additional €100 net service fee from MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT on the subsequent net total amount. A publication charge of €2,600 net plus a €100 net service fee from MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT are payable for SpringerNature subscription journals. An “opt-out” is not possible.
Therefore, please make sure before publishing that you can finance these costs or that they can be absorbed (see Form: Application for the assumption of charges for open access publications; only possible in case of “Fully Open Access”. Contact person is Dr. Seffer (kristin.seffer@th-deg.de); please note that cost absorption does not take place automatically and every time an application is submitted).

This allows you to publish Open Access free of charge in Nature and in all other hybrid Nature Research and Review Journals. Only articles of the type “Research Article” in subscribed journals are covered by this agreement. See "Eligible Journals" under https://www.springernature.com/gp/open-science/oa-agreements/germany/mpdl-nature-ta → Publishing open access or the direct link: https://resource-cms.springernature.com/springer-cms/rest/v1/content/18645238/data/v16
The Open Access journals, such as Nature Communications and Scientific Reports, are excluded from this. These are subject to costs, some of which are discounted via DEAL. You can find specific cost information at https://keeper.mpdl.mpg.de/f/a6dc1e1ed4fc4becb194/?dl=1, column “Current DEAL Cost Contribution” with filter on “Nature Portfolio”.
Wiley
The DIT participates in the Wiley contract of the DEAL project.
There is a discount on the publication charges (APCs) for publications in open access journals of the Wiley and Hindawi brands. For the journal list and discounted APCs, see https://keeper.mpdl.mpg.de/f/fed54cfc4e7f4c178137/?dl=1, column “EUR APC, Discounted (20%)” under revenue model “OA”. Please note that the APC is subject to an additional €100 net service fee from MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT on the subsequent net total amount. Publication charges of €2,200 to €3,150 net (see column "EUR PAR fee" under revenue model "HOA") plus a €100 net service fee from MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT are payable for Wiley subscription journals.
Sage
University publishers can publish as Corresponding Authors in all hybrid journals in the package (title list) in open access free of charge and without restriction as part of the SAGE Premier contract package. The following article types are authorised: original research papers, review papers, brief communications, short reports, case reports.
Your affiliation will be recognised via the Sage portal and you will receive an e-mail from the publisher with a link to confirm the open access option. Please note the time frame stated in the e-mail, after which the free open access option may be cancelled. You can find more information here: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-agreements-at-sage/germany
Elsevier
The DIT takes part in the Elsevier agreement of the DEAL project.
Publication fees (APCs) for publications in Elsevier open access journals are discounted by 20%, while those for Cell Press and The Lancet receive a 15% discount. For the list of journals and discounted APCs, see https://keeper.mpdl.mpg.de/f/7e57105c4bdf452c93fa, column “DEAL Cost Contribution (current)” under the publishing model “Fully Open Access”. Please note that the APC is subject to a €100 net service fee charged by MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT on the subsequent net total amount.
For subscription journals, you can find the publication fees at https://keeper.mpdl.mpg.de/f/7e57105c4bdf452c93fa, column “PAR Fee or CP/TL APC (current)“. Currently (19 November 2025), the flat rates for Elsevier subscription journals are €2,575 net and for Cell Press and The Lancet subscription journals €6,708 net, plus a €100 net service fee charged by MPDL Service gGmbH and 19% VAT. “Opting out” is not possible. From 2026, costs are expected to rise to €2,652 instead of €2,575 net at Elsevier and to €6,976 instead of €6,708 net at Cell Press and The Lancet, plus the fees and VAT mentioned above.
Therefore, please ensure that you can meet these fees or that they can be covered before publishing (see the Application for Coverage of Fees for Open Access Publications form, only possible for “fully open access”; contact person is Dr. Seffer. Please note that fees will not automatically be covered in all cases where an application is submitted).
Secondary publication
In the open access context, a secondary publication is the freely accessible publication of a scientific work that appears before, simultaneously with or after the publisher's version. This practice, also known as "green open access" or the "green route", refers on the one hand to the publication of preprints in subject-specific repositories such as arXiv bioRxiv or medRxiv, and on the other to the subsequent free access to closed access publications.
Certain conditions must be observed in the case of secondary publication. The self-archiving policy of the respective publisher must be observed; see Sherpa Romeo as a possible research platform. For example, secondary publications may often only be in the form of a preprint or postprint, and not in the version published by the publisher (VoR). Often, embargo periods must also be observed, i.e., a secondary publication may only take place after a certain period of time has elapsed since publication by the publisher. A reference must always be made to the original publication; publishers sometimes stipulate certain details or provide sample sentences, for example:
"This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: [FULL CITE], which has been published in final form at [Link to final article using the DOI]. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with the Publisher’s Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived Versions."
As a rule, secondary publication may take place on appropriate platforms such as institutional or subject-specific repositories. Often, publication on personal websites of the teaching unit or institution is also permitted. Many publishers, however, do not allow distribution in commercial academic networks (e.g., ResearchGate, academia.edu).
You can use the Dissemin service if you want a secondary publication of several or all of your publications.

The Sherpa Juliet platform provides an overview of the open access policies (mandatory or recommended rules or guidelines) of all third-party funders.
In all EU-funded projects in particular, open access to published project publications (e.g., by using Open Research Europe) and organised research data management are mandatory.
Data Management Plan
A data management plan (DMP) documents the entire life cycle envisaged for the data. This means that it describes how the research data is handled from the planning of its collection to the publication, long-term archiving or, if necessary, scheduled deletion of unpublished data. It answers at least the following questions:
- What data is collected?
- Which bodies must be consulted before data collection?
- In what form and where is the data backed up in the various project phases?
- Who has access to the data and when?
- Who is responsible for the individual steps?
- What legal guidelines must be observed?
- Will the data be made available to others and if so, how?
The video https://youtu.be/fMxhFRAul80 and https://forschungsdaten.info/ provide a general introduction to research data management (RDM) and DMPs. There are also various software tools that support the creation of a DMP, such as RDMO, DMPonline, DMPTool or GRO.Plan.
Publishing and archiving data
Research data can either be published in data journals or, especially in the case of larger datasets, in online repositories and thus generally also archived for the long term. The re3data platform provides an overview of existing repositories. In addition to subject-specific repositories, there are also generic research data repositories. The most widely known ones are Zenodo, Dryad, Figshare and OSF. GRO.data can also be used in Germany via the Academic Cloud.
For local data, you can of course also use your network drives or the additional IT services of the university.
FAIR data
Published research data should be FAIR. The acronym FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The GO FAIR Initiative has created a comprehensive framework for these FAIR principles.
Many third-party funders, above all the DFG and the EU, call on researchers to publish their datasets in accordance with the FAIR principles wherever possible.
Legal Aspects
Open educational resources refer to freely accessible teaching and educational material. The most important thing here is to use an open licence such as a Creative Commons licence (preferably CC BY). However, especially when using third-party content (e.g., images), make sure that you have the necessary licensing rights and that different licence types can actually be combined. A wealth of information on finding and creating open educational resources can be found at https://open-educational-resources.de/.
Publishing Oers
Depending on the type of open educational resource, you can publish it on iLearn, on OPEN vhb of the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern or its OER repository or on an OER repository such as OER Commons. Generic repositories such as Zenodo, Dryad, Figshare and OSF also generally support document types such as presentation, lesson, video and their publication.
You can apply for financial support to create an open course for OPEN vhb, see https://www.vhb.org/lehrende/kurse/foerderung/ and its sub-pages on the funding rounds
Legal Aspects
Software whose source code is open (i.e., can be viewed, modified and used free of charge) and is provided with an open licence is called open source. There are various open source licences: here are the most important licences and a selection guide. The licences differ, among other things, in Copyleft. This clause is responsible for ensuring that extensions to open software are also open.
Publishing the source code
Git, GitHub, GitLab, SourceForge and similar platforms can be used for publishing and version control of code for open source software, see for example https://mygit.th-deg.de/explore/projects.
Definition and legal aspects
Open hardware is a collective term for construction plans (e.g., design files, installation instructions, blueprints, exploded views) that are designed, published and licensed for reuse and, ideally, provide readily available components. The Open Source Hardware Association has named various criteria in its definition, in its best practices and in its checklist that open hardware should fulfil, for example technology neutrality. DIN SPEC 3105-1 and DIN SPEC 3105-2 can also be used. As with open source software, it is important to include an open hardware licence with the publication, such as the CERN Open Hardware Licence.
Publishing open hardware files
In addition to source code platforms, s. section "Open source Software", you can use the generic open hardware repository or specific repositories depending on the type of open hardware, such as Thingiverse for 3D-print files, to publish open hardware files. Individual open hardware journals have also been founded in recent years and offer the possibility of publishing files and an accompanying article.
